How to Eat Sensibly During the Holidays

How To Eat Sensibly During The Holidays

The holidays are coming; the holidays are coming!  If you’ve already begun worrying about how much weight you might gain between November and January, you may want to plan ahead with some strategies for eating sensibly during the holidays.

The first thing to acknowledge is that the holiday season shouldn’t be an excuse to abandon all of your positive health habits and overindulge.  Yes, there will be fattening foods; yes, there will be parties; yes, there will be cookies and candy and pie.  But how much of that stuff do you really need to eat?  Certainly not ALL of it.

Another crucial thing to remember is that making healthy choices for your meals and snacks most of the time will go a long way in preventing you from overdoing it at occasional parties.  Do your best to eat plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean protein, and low fat dairy products for your main meals and snacks.

Modest indulgences are fine as long as you aren’t overdoing it all day, every day.  If you’ve eaten healthy all day long, having one small serving of cake or pie at a dinner party isn’t going to do a lot of damage to your diet.  Remember that size matters – serving size, that is.  Having a sliver of this or a taste of that isn’t a big deal, unless you consume a few dozen “slivers and tastes” at every gathering.

Next, keep in mind that all beverages except water have calories, especially if they are sweetened.  Did you know that one cup of egg nog contains more than 300 calories and 19 grams of fat?  If you’re going to indulge in a small serving of a fattening food, be sure to drink water instead of sweetened beverages.

Last but not least, if you bake a lot for the holidays, be sure to wrap the goodies and store them out of sight so you aren’t tempted to keep picking at them.  As soon as they come out of the oven and cool off, wrap them and place them somewhere far away, like in a box on a shelf in your basement.

The key to sensible eating during the holidays is to simply enjoy yourself in moderation.  If you want a cookie, enjoy a cookie – but don’t keep eating more and more of them.  Train yourself to be satisfied with just one, or don’t eat them at all.
